Ford Mustangs and Holden ZB Commodores will drive in the Dunlop Super2 series from 2023, Supercars has confirmed.

That will see up to five different models on the secondary grid, with these Gen2 supercars competing against the existing machines – namely the VF Commodore, Falcon FG X and Nissan Altima. Drivers in Gen2 cars will compete in a different class than those in older machines.

Development comes as the Repco Supercars Championship prepares to implement its highly anticipated Gen3 regulations.

At that time, the new Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro will debut competitively at the Sydney SuperNight next August.

Super2 committed last month to operating its existing cars in 2022.

“This is an exciting development for the Dunlop Super2 series,” said Adrian Burgess, Director of Motorsport for Supercars, on the category’s official website.

“After the introduction of Gen3 into the Repco Supercars Championship, a number of Super2 teams will immediately get involved with ZB Commodores and Ford Mustangs, while others will stick to current programs.

“The main focus for us is on the driver’s path, a commitment that Dunlop shares.

“This combined category gives drivers the opportunity to become more familiar with racing in supercars.”

Super2 representative Amin Chahda added, “Allowing competitors to drive different vehicles side by side as they compete for different trophies will ensure that competition remains an important part of the path for supercars.

“This will help a number of teams currently in this category evolve their programs at no upgrade cost.”

Round 2 of the Super2 Series and Super3 Series will take place at the NTI Townsville 500 this weekend.
