Brown advises WAU to fight for 2022 Supercars titles

Walkinshaw Andretti United director Zak Brown says his Supercars team will start winning the big championships in 2022.

After the gorgeous scenes at Bathurst 1000 2021, McLaren CEO has declared his pairing Chaz Mostert and Nick Percat the best in the pit lane.

Mostert goes into the new year after a dominant Great Race victory alongside Lee Holdsworth, which was achieved despite a puncture.

Percat, meanwhile, is returning to the team that gave him his start in Supercars a decade later.

When asked if there were parallels to be drawn between his teams in Formula 1 and the IndyCar series, Brown said that all the plates were in place.

“As with Formula 1 and IndyCar, it’s all about building momentum,” Brown told Speedcafe.com.

“You have to get your victories before you go for the championship. I think now that we’ve finished our future driver line-up, I don’t see any reason why we shouldn’t be a title contender next year. That doesn’t mean we’ll win, but I think that’s the goal we’re going to start with.

“I couldn’t be more excited,” he added.

“We had a strong year and we won the biggest race of the year and the way we did it was great.

“The team, as you can imagine, as well as our sponsors and employees, got such a boost in the off-season.

“You can carry the trophy around. You’re only as good as your last race. “

With his Bathurst 1000 victory, Mostert moved up to third place in the drivers’ standings, marking his best result so far in supercars.

Percat comes after five straight seasons with Brad Jones Racing, the last two in which he finished seventh.

For Brown, the fact that two riders are equally capable of fighting for the championship is a good sign of development within the team.

“I would like to believe that both drivers will fight for it, which will also make the team stronger, which is exciting to have two drivers who I think are capable of really racing and fighting for the championship.” said Brown.

“Hopefully that should mean that they push each other forward.

“I can’t think of a better line-up for Supercars drivers,” he added.

“They get the cars to do their job on an incredibly competitive series. As far as I can tell, it’s an equally good driver line-up, if not the best driver line-up in supercars. “

Walkinshaw Andretti United will move into the pit lane in 2022 thanks to fourth place in the team classification.

The inaugural run of the Repco Supercars Championship, the Repco Newcastle 500, will take place from March 4-6.
