Monta, a Danish technology start-up, believes it can help accelerate the rollout of EV charging point infrastructure in the UK. The app connects private business owners with charging station installers to provide additional stations, while homeowners can also get on board by installing and renting private charging points to neighbors and local drivers.
“We currently have a roaming network with 150,000 charging points in Europe and we’re adding another one in the UK, so another 60,000 or 70,000 charging points.
“Fortunately, many of these big players aren’t known to develop the user interface. That’s why we work with them, that’s why product customization is really good for us. ”
There are currently more than 132,000 new electric vehicles registered in the UK, up 28 percent over the previous year.
The Monta app already has more than 6,000 active users, and by 2022 there should be 400,000.
“We started working with installers, operators, wholesalers in the UK and the initial feedback was really, really positive.
“We speak to stakeholders across the UK, not just the Greater London area, and we want to understand their feedback on our product as we are the software layer to make it easier to scale.”
To meet the 2030 deadline, the UK would have to install around 700 chargers a day to meet demand, a total of 2.3 million.
There are around 25,000 electric vehicle chargers in the UK, 10,000 of which are fast chargers.
Commenting on Monta’s long-term goal, Mr. Rasmussen said, “We really want to do what Android did for the smartphone, and we want to do that for charging.
“So we want to be known for really nice layers of software that users are familiar with, and then it can be less important to users whether it’s Schneider, Siemens or ABB Charger.
“It will be the same experience for her.”
Monta has raised a total of £ 4.2million in capital investments since its inception in December 2020, including early investors in the leading electric vehicle, Tesla.
