We have been driving 100 percent electric since 2014. Our first car barely drove 100 miles on a single charge in winter, which led to frequent “range anxiety” on journeys longer than the school trip. The fact that we still made it to Devon and Manchester is entirely thanks to the Electric Highway.
Of course, competitors are trying to penetrate this market after it has established itself not least thanks to the courage and vision of highway architects Dale Vince and Ecotricity. You invested a lot in the charging infrastructure when electric cars were still reserved for hobbyists and well-meaning eco-warriors like our family.
Several times we were rescued by a lonely Electric Highway charging station in a sleepy gas station on some long-distance stretches of the highway network. I hope the competition and market surveillance authority will take this into account when deciding on possible measures in the context of their forthcoming investigation (“Call for explorations in charging stations for electric vehicles”, report, 24/25 July).
