A 72-year-old man died after a Northampton County ambulance pulled into his car on the east coast on Tuesday morning.
Wayne B. Gerringer of Franktown died in the impact.
The driver of the ambulance – a 2018 Chevrolet Tahoe – was heading south on Route 13 toward an incident that had its lights and sirens on, according to a statement from Virginia State Police. As the driver approached an intersection on Rogers Drive, Gerringer headed east on Rogers Drive.
Gerringer – the driver and the only occupant in a 1999 Toyota Corolla – got in the way of the ambulance and was hit, police say. At around 10.12 a.m., the police were called to investigate the accident
The ambulance driver was rushed to Shore Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The authorities are investigating the crash.
