Security measures for limousines are advancing in the house

The US House of Representatives has proposed a trio of stretch limo safety precautions proposed after a crash in Schoharie County that killed 20 people, US MP Paul Tonko said Friday.

The proposals are intended to build on a package of comprehensive sedan safety regulations that were proposed shortly after the sedan crash in 2018.

Actions include a grant program designed to encourage states to implement a performance and admissions management program that requires the confiscation or decommissioning of passenger vehicles that have been identified as having significant safety issues.

Another provision stipulates that limousine drivers must have a commercial passenger car driver’s license. And the third proposal would require government inspection of passenger cars.

“More than two years ago, I teamed up with my New York colleagues to introduce bold, non-partisan laws that raise the bar on limo safety to prevent tragedies like the fatal accident in Schoharie, NY, which involved 20 people lost their lives could prevent unsafe vehicle that should never have been on the road, “Rep. Tonko said in a statement. “Your family members and those of other victims have been the inspiration and powerful driving force behind our work in writing and advancing these sensible reforms. As millions of vaccinated Americans return to planning weddings, sending children to school dances, and traveling to other ceremonial events, any further delay in advancing these life-saving efforts will put countless of our friends and loved ones at risk of yet another preventable tragedy.
