After a video from his supercar showroom-like garage went viral, Umno youth leader for the Titiwangsa constituency, Nazir Hussin Akhtar Hussin, took to Instagram Live on September 3 to share his position.
The 24-minute video, which went live at 6pm, was supposed to be a “chatter-chat” session with his followers, most of which he used to respond to online responses to himself and his supercars.
At the time of writing, the video had received 22,824 views and 200 comments.
Claims it is part of the opposition agenda
In Malay, Nazir claimed that the video of his house and supercars uploaded to Twitter was made by a member of the opposition PKR party.
In his opinion, the purpose of the opposition parties is to “spin” stories to make Umno look bad.
While he said the article’s headline from “a Singapore news site” contained no negative comments about him, Nazir went on to claim that Mothership was “friends with the DAP (an opposition party).”
He further accused Mothership of wanting to “destroy Umno”.
“This is one of the evil ways the opposition use to involve Umno in a game of perception,” he said.
Mothership is not affiliated with any political party.
Didn’t use taxpayers’ money to fund his lifestyle
Following the backlash from internet users for displaying his wealth at a sensitive time when many are struggling to make ends meet amid the pandemic, Nazir also claimed that he had in no way used or misused taxpayers’ funds.
He repeated to his “haters” and “ignorant” people that he was not elected to power so that there was no way for him to tap public funds.
As for his lavish lifestyle, Nazir said that “it is not wrong for someone to be himself”.
“I’m just a normal guy. This is my lifestyle. I can’t please anyone. If I do something wrong, if I cheat people, if I evade taxes, it’s easy to find me. I don’t hide my lifestyle,” he said added during the session.
Formerly concerned with “back door and underground”
Nazir clarified that he had only recently shown his lifestyle and luxurious life as he had more time on his hands after losing Barisan Nasional in the 2018 general election.
“For those who just met me, I bought this house in 2010, but I didn’t post a lot about my lifestyle (on social media),” he said, adding that he had too much “backdoor and underground” before that “had” work.
He hopes that he doesn’t have to “hide” his lifestyle if he gets a better (political) position in the future.
“I don’t have to be a hypocrite, people can already know that I am myself,” he said.
He “helped a lot of crazy people”
Nazir took the opportunity during the live session to show his viewers a more generous and charitable side of him.
He said that his foundation, which is funded with his own money, helps at least 500 people every month.
Nazir claimed that he donated at least RM 50,000 to 200,000 (S $ 16,000 to S $ 65,000) a month to charity.
All the charity work was done “in secret” since he didn’t have to tell others about it, he said.
“Even my wife doesn’t know about it,” he added.
He told him it was enough that only his brothers, who are part of the foundation, and God knew his work.
His “secret” only recently came to light when he revealed more of his charity work as a growing number of people began to question his wealth.
Funded study program
Nazir also said he funded undergraduate degree programs between 2010 and 2018.
In preparation for their Sijil Pengajian Malaysia (SPM) exam, similar to the GCE O level in Singapore, at least 35,000 low-income students, especially Malays, were supported.
“I’ve helped an insane number of people,” he said, adding that his work was for “the party (umno) and the nation”.
“I keep millions of ringgits every year to help the unfortunate,” he said.
